Fats can be of either vegetable origin (oils, most margarine) or animal origin (butter, cream). Depending on the types of fatty acids it contains, fat can be more or less favourable to health (especially cholesterol and condition of the arteries).
It is better to encourage vegetable fats (without cholesterol) than animal ones, such as butter, without removing them completely from your diet. In reasonable quantities, cream or butter can be eaten every day.
Whatever the fat, they are commonly high in calories. Therefore, excessive intake of fat increases weight gain.
